Entry Door Hardware

How To Ensure You Have The Right Entry Door Hardware

The entry door to your home needs to make a good impression with visitors. So when you choose the door that you like the most it is essential that you have the right entry door hardware to go along with it.

Choosing an entry door requires you to think about the overall style of your home. Think about who will use this door and how people will use the door. What characteristics do you want for your entry door? From a style point of view, your entry door hardware needs to compliment your internal décor.

Some Entry Door Hardware Ideas

There is a lot of hardware available for entry doors. So here we will give you some examples of what to look for.

The Entrance Set

You can purchase an entry door entrance set in a number of different styles. It should be pretty easy for you to find an entrance set that compliments the existing look of your home. An entrance set is very important because it will provide you with security. Entrance sets usually come with a key for opening and locking the door.

So what kinds of front door entrance sets are available? Well there are a number of choices here such as two piece handle sets and full plates. Quite often you will find that a door entrance set includes door knobs or levers to open the door.

The Deadbolt

To improve the security of your home we recommend installing a deadbolt. When you buy an entry door these days you will often find that it has pre-drilling for the installation of a deadbolt.

There are single cylinder deadbolts and double cylinder deadbolts. A single cylinder deadbolt uses a key on one side and a latch on the other. Double cylinder deadbolts use a key on both sides. Single cylinder deadbolts are more common because double cylinder deadbolts make exiting fast in an emergency more difficult.

Levers and Door Knobs

It is your choice whether you go for a door knob or lever arrangement for your entry door. Lever handles are the more popular choice because of their ease of use. With a door knob you have to make a twisting motion to open the door.

If you have young children or elderly relatives staying with you then we recommend a lever solution. There are entry door levers that have a left or right hand design so be sure to get the right one for your family.

Mortise Sets

If your entry door has a pocket then you can use a mortise set. A pocket is a cutout at the edge of your door where you can insert the locking mechanism. Mortise sets were very popular entry door hardware items a few years ago but not so much now.

Things to Consider with Entry Door Hardware

Sometimes you do not need to buy a new door lock for your entry door. You only need to replace an existing handle or back plate. In this situation you can buy a trim-only kit which is a lot easier to install than a totally new lock set.

With a trim-only kit you will usually get the handle, the spindle and the handle trim. You need to check that the components within the trim-only set will do the job properly. In particular make sure that the spindle threading is identical to the current spindle.

You need to measure your entry door before buying hardware for it. Normally a front door is 1 ¾ inches thick. The measurements are important to ensure that any handle set will fit and cover up any holes left by the previous arrangement.
